Schools & Substance Abuse
• The more a student uses alcohol, marijuana, or other illicit drugs, the lower his grade point average is likely to be. • Frequent users are five times more likely to drop out of school altogether than other students. • Students who sell drugs or use them early are much more likely to engage in violent behavior than others.
• Alcohol abusers are four times more likely to cut classes or skip school, marijuana abusers six times more likely to do so. • Teen smoking is related to depression and anxiety disorders, damaging school performance and the teenager’s long-term health.
• Alcohol abuse over time can reduce brain size - the hippocampus (responsible for learning and memory) shrinks roughly 10 percent, severely hurting school performance, and damage to the prefrontal cortex can retard an individual’s decision-making ability. |
TAD FORCE
“Teenagers Against Drugs” is the youth component of the Okaloosa County Anti-Drug Coalition. Youths are a critical part of our present and 100% of our future. With input from youths, our coalition strives to address youth issues, engage youth in the coalition and help them stay drug-free, productive citizens This youth-led movement can help us instill positive values, foster good citizenship and enable youths to become resources for preventing drug-abuse in their schools and neighborhoods through information on the dangers of drug abuse, which includes alcohol and tobacco. |
